Dental Implant Aftercare: What to Expect and How to Heal Well
May 8, 2025 9:00 amGetting a dental implant is a big step toward restoring your smile. But once the procedure is done, the healing begins—and how you care for your implant during this time can make all the difference.
At Southwest Dental Care, Dr. Thomas Orme guides patients in Jefferson City through every step of the dental implant process—including recovery, where good habits start. If you’ve recently had an implant placed, or are preparing for one soon, here’s what to keep in mind.
The First Few Days
Mild swelling, tenderness, and slight bleeding are all normal in the first 24 to 48 hours. Dr. Orme may recommend using an ice pack in short intervals to reduce swelling. Stick to soft foods and avoid chewing on the side of your implant. You’ll also want to skip straws (suction can disrupt the healing process) and hot beverages for a few days.
If you’ve been prescribed antibiotics or a rinse, use them exactly as directed. These help lower the risk of infection and promote healing.
Keep the Area Clean — Gently
Oral hygiene is still important after implant surgery, but go gently. You can usually brush your other teeth the same day, just avoid the surgical site. Don’t use mouthwash unless instructed—it can be too harsh early on. Instead, rinse with warm salt water a few times a day to keep the area clean. After the first week, you’ll gradually return to your normal routine.
Don’t smoke or use tobacco during the healing period. It can interfere with blood flow and slow down your recovery.
Listen to Your Body
Most patients feel better within a few days, but full healing can take a few months. If you notice worsening pain, swelling, or signs of infection, call the office right away. You know your body — if something doesn’t feel right, it’s always worth checking.
