Tooth Extraction Recovery Tips

August 28, 2021 2:17 am

Due to advancements in dentistry, tooth extractions are now more efficient and pain-free than ever! After a dental extraction, the most important thing you can do is to make sure you’re closely following your dentist’s aftercare guidelines. Here are four simple tips to help you heal as quickly and comfortably as possible:

  1. Keep Your Gauze In Place
  2. After your extraction, keep your gauze in place for at least 30 minutes. If you soak through the first piece of gauze, put another clean piece in its place. Putting gentle pressure on the extraction site will help the bleeding stop and a blood clot to form over the area. In the event that the bleeding isn’t slowing down, contact your dentist. They may ask you to come back to the office or provide other recommendations to mitigate the bleeding.

  3. Get Plenty of Rest
  4. You never want to overexert yourself after a medical procedure. Make sure you take enough time off work or school to relax and rest. If you push yourself too hard after your extraction, you may hinder the healing process and increase your risk of developing an infection.

  5. Eat Soft Foods
  6. The extraction site will be sensitive and you need to avoid dislodging the blood clot. Stick to soft foods that require minimal chewing. You should also drink from a cup instead of a straw. Straws create a suction that can potentially remove the blood clot guarding the healing area.

  7. Carefully Clean the Area
  8. After any procedure, there is always a risk of infection. A few days after your procedure, regularly swish with warm salt water. You don’t want any food or bacteria to get lodged near the healing area, so it’s crucial to keep it flushed out. When brushing your teeth, gently brush around the area to prevent irritation.

"This was the best experience with a dentist I've ever had. I had an implant done and was expecting a lot of pain. I had no pain at all. It was so refreshing to have a dentist who cares about his patients. I highly recommend Dr. Orme and his staff at Southwest Dental Care."

- Sheryl B.

"I'm the kind of person who likes a real explanation of what's happening, even if I don't really understand half of it. Dr. Orme went the extra mile to explain everything in a casual and personable way without "dumbing it down". The office space is modern and fresh, and the staff is welcoming and characterful."

- John D.

"I worked with Dr. Orme in the Dominican Republic recently on a humanitarian trip. I watched him work hard every day at making the people feel good, creating an experience, as well as teaching those around him. He makes patients and co-workers feel good. He's positive, very upbeat, and I would recommend him strongly!!"

- Spencer C.

"He is the best dentist I have ever been to. He listens and only does what you want done without pressure. Very informative without the lecture. Dr. Orme and his staff are very friendly."
